The Avon Tour of Britain: A Unique Challenge

Imagine an era when the spirit of competition meant taking almost untouched road cars and pushing them to their limits across the scenic tracks and twisting routes of Great Britain. That was the vision behind the Avon Tour of Britain. Cars built to App J Group 1 standards barely changed from their showroom counterparts, lined up for the challenge, with only minor tweaks like blueprinted engines, tougher suspension, and standard brakes allowed. After 1975, these rules evolved into the so-called “Group 1.5,” but the heart of the competition remained: real-world cars, real drivers, and real roads.

Legendary Manufacturers and Rising Stars

From 1973 to 1975, the event drew legendary makes—Chevrolet, Ford, BMC, Vauxhall and a blend of seasoned rally and circuit racers eager to prove their mettle. The very first winning pairing was James Hunt and Robert Fearnall, whose Camaro Z28 crossed the finish line ahead of the pack. This taste of victory came before Hunt soared to Formula One fame, adding to the event’s legend. The following events saw rally drivers to the fore in the shape of Roger Clark and Jim Porter (Ford Escort RS2000) (1974); and, Tony Pond and David Richards (Ford Escort RS2000) (1975).

Rewind Tour of Britain: Reviving the Glory

Fast-forward to today: Motor Racing Legends, in partnership with the BARC, has reignited the excitement with the “Rewind Tour of Britain.” According to MRL’s announcement, the event will be guided by FIA Appendix J and K historic regulations (details to follow soon) but with two steadfast requirements: all cars must remain street legal and ride on standard tyres.

Drivers will tackle exhilarating circuits such as Thruxton, and weave through historic rally stages around Blenheim Palace, the crown jewel steeped in RAC Rally heritage. This multi-venue adventure isn’t just about speed; it’s about linking iconic locations with some of the most breathtaking driving roads in Europe. The anticipation is palpable, as elite drivers from across the continent are already lining up to take part.

The countdown is on for the Rewind Tour of Britain, set to unfold over three and a half action-packed days, from May 27 to May 30, 2027. Get ready to witness history in motion!
