MGB (Still) Racing

The Good Old Days with the MG Car Club

Let me set the scene: back in my heyday, I’d rock up to MG Car Club race meetings, sometimes snapping photos for the drivers, but quite often getting roped in (usually with a grin and a slightly oily set of hands) to help keep the cars running. You see, that’s the thing with classic racing: half the fun is tinkering in the paddock just minutes before the green flag drops.

Honestly, it was brilliant. There’s nothing quite like the sights, sounds, and smells of trackside life, and before I knew it, I was having a go behind the wheel myself. And yes, I might call it a “career” with the biggest possible inverted commas.

The Donington Revelation

There’s one chat that sticks in my mind. Picture it: Donington Park, BCV8 race buzzing in the background, and I’m nattering with one of the MG Car Club’s top brass, who (spoiler alert) would later go on to be the chairman. He leans over and says, “You know, no one really wants to watch MGBs race.” I know sacrilege, isn’t it?

From Then to Now

That was 1990. Fast forward to today and, well, not only are MGBs still thundering around the circuits, but we’ve now got the Motor Racing Legends Generations Trophy. Turns out, those little British sports cars have a bit more staying power (and entertainment value) than some folks suspected. Long live the MGB!
